Multiple Monitor Management ($45), Windows - Ultramon!
« on: November 08, 2009, 02:17:37 PM »

So, if you are stepping into the multi-monitor world, you simply must get this program.  It actually costs money, which is semi against my religion and definitely against my preference.  However, I am willing to pay for perfection... or... well...  something darn close.

Description:
UltraMon is a utility for multi-monitor systems, designed to increase productivity and unlock the full potential of multiple monitors.
-efficiently move windows and maximize windows across the desktop
-manage more applications with the Smart Taskbar
-control application positioning with UltraMon Shortcuts
-multi-monitor support for desktop wallpapers and screen savers
-mirror your main monitor to secondary monitors for a presentation

Compatible with:
XP, Vista, Win 7...

Comments:
Microsoft needs to buy this software and incorporate it into windows.  The features I like best are:
-Two task bars.  Minimized windows show on a taskbar on that monitor.  Windows for some god awful reason refuses to do this, even though they have been supporting up to 10 multi-monitors since Windows 2000.
-move fully maximized windows with a drag of the top border.  This is incredibly helpful.
-Wallpaper - Either one large paper that spans all monitors or a different wallpaper for each monitor
-Monitor Configuration Profiles - turn on and off monitors if not needed or reconfigure your monitors with a click of a button.

Also, check out their multi-monitor gallery.  Nice!

An interesting article on Ultramon

And now a word on multi-monitors and energy consumption.
Are you getting any naughty ideas of your own? Just remember, if you have multiple screens, please bee courteous to the environment and use them responsibly.  Do your part to lower wasted energy whenever possible.  Multi-monitors can be a great boon to productivity and utilization of your system. They are the windows to your computer's soul... or something like that.
So, what do I recommend? I am glad you asked.
1) Turn off monitors that you do not use.  (windows should have a feature that disables monitors from your configuration, when turned off.   Since they don't, you can use Ultramon to do this if desired.
2)For Convenience, get a control center power switch with power switches for each monitor.  This allows you to easily turn off monitors which are not in use, or all monitors with one flick
3) Set your power settings to turn off your monitors after 10-20 minutes of non-use.
4) Buy energy efficient rated monitors.
5) Get rid of those old CRT's.  They are ugly and take more energy to run =D

Remember:
With great power, comes great responsibility!
